EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
