In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
