Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the right to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
